Letterkenny
Letterkenny is the largest town in
County Donegal. It is situated on a hillside overlooking the River
Swilly. Letterkenny is an exciting town with some newly constructed shopping centres
to complement the many traditional craft shops, restaurants and pubs.
Letterkenny is home to An Grianán Theatre, cinema complexes and leisure centres. Donegal
County Museum is also located in Letterkenny, housing a fascinating range of
artifacts, covering all aspects of life in Donegal from the pre-historic
period to the 20th century.
Letterkenny plays host to a number of major events. The Earagail
Arts Festival, features international music, drama, art and
children's events. It takes place in July, with over 100
events in more than thirty venues through North Donegal. The renown Donegal
International Car Rally takes place in June of each year.
Donegal County
Museum
Erected to
collect, record, preserve, communicate and display the history
of donegal. Irt is located at High Street, Letterkenny
and houses a fascinating
range of artefacts covering all aspects of life in Donegal.
The museum charts the history of the county over the last
three centuries, from the Penal Laws to the emergency. Donegal
County Museum, built in 1846 is based in a fine old stone building, once part
of the Letterkenny Workhouse.
Glenveagh National Park
Glenveagh National Park lies along the Derryveagh Mountains. This beautiful
national park is just a 20 minute drive away from Letterkenny. It
includes a 14,000 hectare deer park set amongst the mountain
range around Lough Veagh. Here also is a visitor centre with
audio-visual displays and Glenveagh Castle surrounded by one of the
finest gardens in Ireland. Guided tours are also available.
Newmills Corn and Flax Mills
Newmills Corn and Flax Mills
are on the
Glenties Road out of Letterkenny and here you can see one of the largest
working waterwheels in Ireland, made by the Stevenson Foundry of
Strabane in 1867.
Glebe House and Gallery
Gifted to the nation in 1981 by artist Derek Hill, Glebe House and Gallery
houses his fine collection. It also includes over 300 works of art by leading twentieth century
artists, including Picasso and Kokoshka. Located in a Regency house built in
1828 and set in woodland, decorated with William Morris
textiles, Islamic and Japanese art.
Colmcille Heritage Centre
Colmcille Heritage Centre,
located
at Gartan, Churchill, Letterkenny. The centre houses a unique
interpretative exhibition featuring the life and times of Saint
Colmcille (Columba) - Patriarch of the Irish monastic system and founder
of the Scottish Church. The centre is located in a beautiful stone
building on the shores of Lough Gartan, within the Derryveagh mountain
range.
Fort Dunree Military Museum
Fort Dunree Military Museum
located in Buncrana
houses a fine display of military memorabilia and artefacts, together
with an array of large guns from the twentieth century. Using vibrant
and colourful interactive displays the unique history of Fort Dunree is
explained and recreated.
The Inishowen Maritime Museum
The
ideal family day out. The Inishowen Maritime Museum
is located in
the old coastguard station beside the Greencastle - Magilligan ferry in
Greencastle harbour. It has magnificent views over Lough Foyle and
County Derry. The Museum include the Rocket Cart, Malin Head Radio Station, Sea Captains, The Drontheirm Boat, Irish Navy
Service, Emigration, Shipwrecks and Greencastle Ferry.
The Museum has a state-of-the-art Planetarium showing how mariners used to navigate with the stars. It also provides
astronomy and light shows. It is also home to Ireland's only
permanently-installed concert laser. Laser Light shows are performed
live and accompanied by traditional Irish music.

The Fanad Peninsula
The Fanad Peninsula stretching from Milford, The Gateway to the Fanad
Peninsula, through Kerrykeel to the West, Fanad Head in the north and
Rathmullan and Ramelton in the East.
Kerrykeel
Kerrykeel is beautiful little village lying
at the foot of the majestic Knockalla Mountain.
Fanad Head
Fanad Head with its magnificent lighthouse
erected in 1818, marks the entrance to Lough Swilly.
Portsalon
Popular tourist attraction with its 18-hole
Golf Course. The majestic Ballymastocker Bay
beach was once voted the second most beautiful
beach in the world.
Rathmullan
Rathmullan boasts a Blue Flag Beach.
Located near its harbour is the Flight of the Earls Heritage Centre home
to The Flight of the Earls exhibition which
illustrates the the life and times of the Earls, O'Neill and O'Donnell.
It also illustrates the aftermath of their flight, which took place in
1607 at Rathmullan, marking a major milestone in the Irish struggle for
independence from the English.
Ramelton
The one time Capital of
Donegal, Ramelton is a picturesque heritage town.
Donegal
Ancestry Centre which is the official family history research
centre for County Donegal is located here. It was established to help people trace their
Donegal ancestors. The Ramelton Story is told
through illustrated storyboards, artefacts, a scaled model of Ramelton
town.
The Inishowen Peninsula
With some of the finest scenery in Ireland, The Inishowen Peninsula is within a half-hours drive of Letterkenny.
The are many interesting and historic
attractions.
Buncrana
Buncrana, the largest town on the Inishowen
peninsula. The town has a leisure centre, tennis courts and basketball
pitch. There is an excellent variety of restaurants and shops. Buncrana is
also host to the Buncrana Music Festival which takes place in July.
